What is everyones problem with having rare items in the game?
I don't get it. Why is so many people against having rare and uniqe items in the game?
Is it because that everyone is paranoid that it will create uber items or what?
Why not just make tons and tons of incredible rare items that will just look uniqe or something but not be overpowered? To help the economy - to help keep people playing and aiming for desirable things out of sheer bragging or to have a goal just for the sake of it? And it will create more variaty, color and uniqeness to the world?
I like just being able to look at other players in Online RPGs/MMOGs or whatever and just see their rare stuff - Even if its not something I will ever get it's funny to see people who look different.
And I mean incredible rare items... something that won't drop more than 10 times in GWs entire lifetime. or special rewards/emotes for winning tournaments or something?
Or does people have the mantra like; "if I can't have it... NOBODY CAN!!!".
I don't think you need uber stats or something to make rare and desirable items. If it was me they could sure as hell make 60k, 100k, 100,000k and 1 million armors or whatever..
The key to GW was that these were not NEEDED to win, not that they couldnt make some truly exceptional hardcore fluff for people who wanted it? I'll never play that much or get a chance to get something like that, but for sheer amusement it would be fun to see other people getting it and walking besides someone who had it.
I think GW could get allot of extra people on their side if they did it.
And best of all it wouldnt interfere with the balance. Just more variaty in looks and more to persue. Ain't that a win/win situation?

They already do have rare-skinned weapons.

That's obviously not what he meant. There's hundreds of thousands of Crystalline swords around, same for all the other "rare" skinned weapons. Anyone can get one.
I agree with the OP.

Yep, GW could definately use more variety in weapons - and i'm not talking just about skins. As long as the weapon is kept balanced with what's already available, I want to see more interesting and useful stats for weapons, perhaps with bigger advantages but more obvious drawbacks too.
I would also like to see some more PvE oriented mods that would offer a nice advantage in PvE (at the expense of a regular mod) but have no use whatsoever in PvP.

After the devs GWs gameplay is based on skill rather then on playing time. That is why you cant get further then lvl20 and there are no uber items.
In my opinion it is a good and a bad thing. Its good because this way not the person who plays the most, but the person whos got a tactic wins, and that is cool. But its bad at the same time.
Just the other day i fought a mission with a lvl12 warrior and i am a lvl20 warrior and it was not such a big difference. I cheked out his build and it was fine, mybe he couldnt compete with me in pvp, but shurely in pve.
And that is not good. I mean i played my arse off to get to lvl20 and make own build, find out how much attribute to have for what thing, get the right weapon for me and stuff, and then a lvl12 was as good as me in pve...
I would like to be able to go throught the same mission with the lvl12 and see mosters run away from me when i get close. I would like to see me be able to smash one down in 1-2 hits and then just jump at the next one and see them all scared shitless not knowing how to react. I want to be able to be next to a lvl12 and make him understand that hes nothing against a lvl20.
And so it would be good for the gameplay and the fun to have uber items and skills and so on, but it wouldnt be so good for pvp because there the best one wins, not the one who plays most.

I can understand it from both points.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE games with millions of lvls and over-powered stuff. And one of my biggest woes is that 'uniques' never are unique. However, as said, GW is about skill, not "my sword does 300 more dmg than your sword"
That said, I have mentioned before in similar threads that simply unique skins would rule. Say as rewards for super hard quests, perhaps the first team to complete "uber hard mission 1" would all get copies of a weapon which was ornamental and had a completely different skin to anything else. Things like that. Same stats, different skins. Unique names maybe, instead of "Fiery Dragon Sword of Swordsmanship" have one that has the same stats but called "Glint's Downfall" or something.

Wha...? Level 20 isn't exactly hard to reach, or supposed to be considered very high. After all, most monsters after the desert are higher than you. With the same skils and atts on characters, the level 12 wouldn't come close...

Opp: The only complaint I heared about uniques was that some players who like to earn lots of gold find them too easy to obtain, so that overall prices drop. But looking at the economy I cant confirm this observation, it looks alright to me.
About rares, I'm not sure. Personally I think rares (yellows) with the same statistics as purple or even blue items just cant be considered rare, no matter what skin they have. I would like rares to have better statistics than lower items.

Well... If the mountain does not come to Muhammed, than Muhammed should go to the mountain isn't it? If the caps on items are so much needed for balance pvp gaming, and at the same time players in pve are dissatisfied because finding the ultimate item does not seem to make you stronger, the solution is: make monsters in pve weaker! Than a better armor DOES make difference, than 1 point more dmg DOES make difference... And the game would still be in balance!

why would you buy any expansions if they had 10000s of weapon skins in chapter1?

Quite possibly the only way to make monsters even weaker would be to remove them from the game.

Hahaha, its so true too. If they gave you everything in one chapter what is the point of buying the rest?
Bad Analogy: When you buy a car no one sells you the "uber" most complete car in existance. If they did you'd never buy another car, do things with your car, or even decorate your car. They lose a crap load of money.... unless the car is worth $10 Billion to overcome overtime money loss :P

^now that made me laugh.
Anyway, I totally agree. The problem is, as stated, that so many things have to be changed in order to add more items.
I liked Diablo 2 for all the items and the hunt for items, but the actual GAME was ridiculous; only a few builds that could work on higher levels, crazy strong enemies and huge market for powerlevelling, together with no real PvP system.
I'd rather have Guildwars as it is now, than have a duplicate of Diablo 2.

oh no,
don't bring diablo 2 back in my life lol,
actually there are maybe 90% of the ppl on diablo who haven't completed all the missions etc.. but just getting powerlvled and then, cows cows cows, till you are lvl 99
lim (n -> infinity ) [GuildWars / n ] > diablo
lol

If thats just for status... there are the gilded capes for winning stuff (gold on EvIL, silver on many others). There are emotes for fame... as for incredible rare items... whats the point? Crystalline and Dwarven prices on perfect are high enough to knock planets out of orbit. If uber-rare items did exist... they would be in the hands of powermerchants, rarely being wielded.

Common skins with perfect stats are easy to find.
Rarer skins with perfect stats are already not as easy to find. Go hunting for Flesh Hornbows, Dwarven Axes, Serpent Axes, Sephis, Crystalline Swords, Tribal Axes, White Scythes, Sickles (the original) Etc.

I was thinking more in terms of armor but weapons yes.
the team that wins the world tournament.. that teams necromancer gets a uniqe chest plate with demonic devil wings. For example... that would be a cool thing to brag about. to see.
THESE items would NOT be MORE POWERFUL than what is CURRENTLY in the game.
Im talking about end game here. Not about putting content from chapters.
Some people just like to have to a goal to pursue. Some people are having an easier time wanting to play PVE for 10,000 billion hours if on the way they could try to get something really cool looking.
I often see people who have played 1500 hours who does not look different than a guy who has not even played 500. It's just about look, diversity and personallity.
so why would a pvper and a role player not go along?
so pvpers feel that everything needs to look the same - Lets strap everything away. from now one you can only be male, only use swords and everything looks the same. lets remove 90% of all textures. Pvpers and role players do not get along.
people dont play games like world of warcraft because they think its fun. they play it because it gives them endless stuff to do. invisible walls.
the difference could be that uniqe and rare items in GW would not be uber or have altered stats. just be incredible rare for looks.

no he was much better than you to get equal results under an 8 level handicap in health/energy/attribute points.
by level 16 he will have left you in the dust as a better player

you simply have the mindset that levels should be the winner not skill
find a new game or get used to being shown how much better skilled others are
